Membership Grades



 

Non corporate grade of membershipS

This grade is open to those who wish to participate in, and learn more about the work of the United Kingdom Association of Professionals and is assigned initially to all members on first joining the UKAP. Student members do not have voting rights and cannot hold office.

Student Members(SUKAP)

Student members are normally those not eligible for a higher membership grade or individuals studying for a recognised qualification above the level they have been awarded.

 

 

Technician Member (TUKAP)

Technician Member are normally requires Educational Qualification A minimum of six months Diploma from a recognized Educational Institute. Work Experience At least 2 years work experience in the relevant field of Professional Education. General Applicants with Higher Educational Qualification/ University Degree, without work experience may be considered for the award of membership subject to the approval of the council of UKAP.

 

Associate Member (AUKAP)

This Membership Grade of the UKAP that confers designatory letters upon an individual (AUKAP). Associate Members do not have voting rights and cannot hold office. Associate Members will have met the following criteria:

  • Qualifications: an United Kingdom Association of Professionals awarded qualification, a degree, foundation degree, diploma or equivalent comparable qualification awarded by a UK or international recognised organisation.
  • Industry Experience: Have achieved the appropriate Industry Experience of 3-5 years and Points in an entry level or supervisory management post directly concerned with the hospitality, leisure and tourism industries, and/or in other areas of work
  • Continuing Professional Development: Have shown evidence of an ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development.

Professional Member (PUKAP)

Requirements: Educational Qualification A University Degree/ Associate membership of a recognized Educational Institution. Work Experience A minimum of 8 years work experience, in which at least 5 years should be in Executive Capacity. General Graduates with 5 years work experience may be considered for the award of membership subject to the approval by the council of UKAP.

 

This grade of membership confers designatory letters upon an individual (PUKAP). Members have full voting rights and can hold office in the UKAP.  Members will have met the following criteria:

  • Qualifications: Have achieved an United Kingdom Association of Professionals awarded qualification, a degree, foundation degree, diploma or equivalent comparable qualification awarded by a UK or international recognised organisation.
  • Industry Experience: Have achieved the appropriate Industry Experience Points in a management or senior management post directly concerned with the hospitality, leisure and tourism industries, and/or in other relevant areas of work.
  • Continuing Professional Development: Have shown evidence of an ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development and have gained and evidenced CPD points.

Fellow Member (FUKAP)

Requirements: Educational Qualification A Master Degree/ Fellow membership of a recognized Educational Institution. Work Experience A minimum of 15 years work experience, in which at least 5 years should be in Executive Capacity. General Bachelor Degree holders/ Associate members of other Educational Institutions with 25 years work experience may be considered for the award of membership subject to the approval by the council of UKAP.

This grade of membership confers designatory letters upon an individual (FIH). Fellows have full voting rights and can hold office in the UKAP.  Fellows will have met the following criteria:

  • have made a significant personal contribution to the industry
  • have been in a Senior Management position for at least 9 years
  • have been a Associate Member (FUKAP) of the UKAP for at least five years or at the discretion of the Executive Council be considered for direct entry in accordance with the Bye-Laws
  • should be able to demonstrate a significant contribution to the aims and work of the UKAP
  • have shown evidence of an ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development and have gained and evidenced CPD Points.
  • Applications for upgrading to Fellowship shall be supported by TWO Fellows of the UKAP, who shall have knowledge of the candidate for THREE years immediately preceding the application. Referees must not be members of the applicant's immediate family circle.

Direct Entry to Fellowship :In exceptional circumstances, the Executive Council may admit directly into Fellowship, individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the industry. They must be able and willing, in the view of the Executive Council, to personally advance the objectives of the UKAP and encourage others to pursue these objectives throughout a major segment of the industry. They should be supported by three Fellows of the United Kingdom Association of Professionals, one of whom acts as proposer. This method of entry into Fellowship is not available by application; it is by invitation only.

 

Doctor Member (DUKAP)

What are the eligibility criteria for membership? 

According to the DUKAP´s statutes, universities or business schools awarding one (or more) doctoral degree(s) in the fields of Management and Business Administration can apply for DUKAP membership. The degree(s) should be awarded on the basis of independent research in the form of a thesis or dissertation. The doctoral programme(s) should prepare for a career in teaching and/or research in Management and Business Administration. Graduates may also seek or/and progress with careers in commerce and industry, public administration and/or government service. 

Criteria for admitting a doctoral programme into DUKAP:

  •  There should be at least twenty faculty members who can chair a doctoral dissertation. 
  • These professors must be resident, available to doctoral students all year long.
  • There should be at least twenty doctoral students participating in the doctoral programme. Doctoral students must have obtained credits after full-time or part-time study in year-long courses and seminars, especially designed to prepare for doctoral studies and the writing up of a thesis or dissertation.
  • Candidate schools and their doctoral programmes have to apply by completing the DUKAP application questionnaire, see below.
  • DUKAP organizes appraisal visits to all candidate members. The candidate members cover all associated costs related to these visits.
  • New Members have to adhere to the DUKAP Statutes of rights and

How the application process unfolds? 

A Doctoral Programme applying for membership follows the six steps below. 

Step 1: Fill in the application for DUKAP Membership from the Internet at

Step 2: Get two reference letters supporting your application for membership from two member schools represented in the DUKAP Executive Committee (if you need help and advise with this step, please feel free to contact informally the DUKAP Secretary General, email: membership@ukap.org.uk

Step 3: Send your application form and reference letters to the DUKAP General Secretariat in Brussels before the end of January (c/o DUKAP Executive Secretary, email: membership@ukap.org.uk ). 

Step 4: All applications are discussed at the following Executive Committee Meeting that takes place in February. If the candidate fulfils the membership criteria and gets a positive assessment the candidate will be asked to host an appraisal visit of its doctoral programme carried out by a peer review team before the next Annual Meeting. The candidate will also be invited to give a short presentation of its doctoral programme at the next Annual Meeting. 

Step 5: Based on the four steps above the Executive Committee makes recommendations for new memberships in the annual General Assembly. The General Assembly decides about admission of new members in the Association. 

Step 6: The new DUKAP member nominates a representative faculty member.

Are there any obligations after admitted in the Association?
 
Each and every DUKAP member agrees to:

  • adhere to the Statutes of the Association
  • pay the annual membership fee
  • cooperate actively in the Association and its activities
  • vote electronically before the General Assembly. 

What are the benefits from membership?

  • Participation / Voting power at the DUKAP Annual Meeting and General Assembly
  • Representation on the DUKAP Executive Committee by elected members nominated each year before the General Assembly
  • Access to information through our informal network, publications and events, including two ‘newly founded’ Internet discussion lists for bringing together all Programme directors and students facilitating electronic communication throughout Europe and beyond
  • Participation of doctoral students in annual DUKAP summer academies and for graduates in annual DUKAP thesis competition
  • Participation in all DUKAP exchange activities: orientation visits, study visits, writing visits and fellowships
  • Participation in all DUKAP seminars and workshops, e.g.UKAP

Thereby, DUKAP helps the participating schools to increase the quality of their Doctoral Programmes and to create an environment of excellence in the British perspective while pursuing diversity. The aim here is to have this network grown as widely as possible, while maintaining quality through peer review and integrity of a broad range of doctoral programmes.
